Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create different hair styles for productions in the film, television, photographic and live entertainment industries. It involves generating ideas for hair designs, and working with styling tools and products to create hair styles according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who use a range of temporary colouring, setting and styling methods to produce current and period hairstyles for performers, models and actors. They may work independently or as a member of a make-up and hair design team.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
*style hair for performances or productions according to at least two different production requirements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:
*discuss hair design requirements for productions with required personnel
*research hairstyles during design process and make reference materials available to others
*prepare hair designs taking performers’ hair and general appearance into account
*provide hair services using appropriate hair products and application techniques
*maintain performers’ hairstyles during productions
*create a documentary record of hair designs
*comply with health and hygiene requirements when providing hair services
*provide clear information to performers during hair styling sessions.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
*common production requirements for styling hair for performances or productions including:

  • technical and environmental factors
  • actions when encountering adverse reactions
  • production schedules
  • characterisation requirements
  • currency of reference materials, documentation and findings
  • key personnel involved in performances or productions
    *roles and responsibilities of personnel who need to be consulted in relation to designing and styling hair
    *typical problems with providing hairdressing and styling services and common solutions
    *health, hygiene and safety requirements that apply to the provision of hairdressing and styling services
    *process for producing hair designs
    *ways hair design can enhance characterisation
    *key features of different period hairstyles
    *typical procedures in providing hairstyling for a performer
    *ways physical appearance can influence the process of designing hairstyles.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.

This unit is not compulsory for any specific course. Depending on the course you study, this unit may be taken as an elective.
