Overview

This unit aims to develop the reading, writing, listening and speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills necessary to undertake a post graduate course at Victoria University.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Reading: 1. Identify, analyse and evaluate information from a range of complex texts for academic research purposes 2. Follow complex formal instructions and explanations relevant to an academic context in relation to individual research requirements 3. Review own texts in relation to complex academic requirements.
  2. Writing: 1. Write proficiently a range of texts for academic purposes ( academic summary, research report) 2. Produce a reference list according to specified conventions 3. Edit and format own texts in relation to complex academic requirements.
  3. Speaking: 1. Engage in and facilitate sustained formal interactions in an academic study context 2. Prepare and give an extended oral presentation on an independently researched topic 3. Give and respond to complex oral instructions and questions for a range of academic purposes.
  4. Listening: 1. Demonstrate understanding of sustained formal interactions in a complex academic setting; 2. Demonstrate critical understanding of complex extended academic oral texts 3. Follow and respond to complex oral instructions and questions for study and independent research tasks.
