Olive Rutto says practical work placements and dedicated teachers are two of the reasons why she recommends Victoria University (VU) to prospective students.

Olive, who is from Nakuru in Kenya, completed a Bachelor of Nursing at VU in 2014 and then started work in Melbourne as a registered nurse at Cabrini Health – a major health care provider.

"The teaching at VU is impeccable. The lecturers and tutors are diligent in their work and always ready and willing to help. The placements I got were very practical and relatable to each and every thing we learned in class."

Olive adds, "I chose VU because I had a few friends who attended VU and were all nursing students. They shared a lot of positive stories about VU. I loved my experience at VU and I would highly recommend it to others."

Olive says her course at VU, which is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council, gave her the confidence necessary to work as a registered nurse. Career options for a registered nurse include working for organisations providing services in medical, surgical, mental health, emergency, orthopaedic, radiology, research, eye and ear, paediatric and residential care.

In future, Olive hopes to work as a community nurse. "I believe the primary responsibility of a nurse is to keep the community safe, to reduce hospital admissions and to assist and educate people on better ways to look and care for themselves. They are the keys to a healthy and vibrant community."
