Graduate Certificate in Teaching (Secondary Education)

With a long career in TV and journalism, like many in the industry Thomas Dullard faced the challenges of 2020. While temporarily stood down from his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thomas seized the chance to reassess his career and develop his skills.

Thomas returned to study, completing a four-unit Graduate Certificate in Teaching that would provide a preview – and a pathway – into a career that may otherwise have never been an option.

“I am a TV producer working in sports and news production. In 2020 I was temporarily stood down from my job due to the pandemic, so I decided it was a great time to do some study. It was a productive way to make the most of time away from full-time employment. A six-month short course helped ease me back into study.

VU’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching (Secondary Education) was an efficient and affordable way to develop myself personally and professionally. It’s given me an introduction to teaching as a profession, to see if it’s something I want to pursue further.

The course was challenging, yet rewarding. It empowered me and other students to engage with topics we’re passionate about and that are of interest.

The VU educators offered stimulating and engaging content. The assessments and assignments were relatable to a future in education.

The knowledge I gained in the different ways people learn, and being more mindful of people’s differences has also helped to round me out as a person, which I also use in my current workplace.

When the time is right for me to continue on with the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education), I’ll have the four units of credit and a great head start to becoming a teacher.”
