The Sir Zelman Cowen Centre is seeking a number of law, justice or politics university students to assist with our Mix it Up program and deliver workshops to high school students from June to August 2018.

For the first part of the program, you will be paired with 5 students and accompany them in a support role while they attend a series of offsite workshops organised by the Centre. The Centre will then train you to deliver a workshop back in the students' high school.

This is a paid position.

Applications for this position for 2018 are now closed.

Become a Mix it up Student Ambassador

  • are studying a degree related to law, justice or politics
  • are confident communicators
  • have good rapport with young people
  • can present information clearly to individuals from diverse backgrounds

  • have culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • are the first in their family to attend university
  • attended high school in the Brimbank region of Victoria.

The total time commitment is approximately 25 – 30 hours.

You will be expected to:

  • attend two workshops (8 hours each) organised and delivered by the Centre, where your role is to support and supervise the students:
    • Careers day (Thursday 12 July)
    • Court & parliament day (Friday 13 July)
  • participate in a facilitation training session (3 hours), preparing you to deliver a workshop for high school students back at their school (Thursday 26 July, 4-7pm)

You will be required to arrive early to help with event set up and registration and, of course, be paid for this time.

In-school workshop

All workshops, including the one in-school workshop you will deliver, have been designed and developed by a team of educational experts. Your job for the in-school workshop is to put your own spin on the presentation and add in your own personal story. You will receive training on how to do this and be briefed about the content of the activities by the Mix it up Coordinator.

You will be paid as a casual professional staff member, as specified in the Victoria University Enterprise Agreement, at Higher Education Worker level HEW5.1. Minimum rate of payment is $42.35 per hour worked plus travel time.

Attendance at meetings and the training/briefing session will be paid at the same rate.
