A week to celebrate our fabulous diversity
Multicultural Week 2021 is a fantastic example of how to celebrate and have fun when we can’t get together. There’s a program of creative events and activities to enjoy with materials supplied for some, prizes and vouchers for others, and a great time guaranteed.
Victoria University is proud to be one of the most culturally diverse universities in Australia. More than 90 different cultures are represented here, and students and staff speak more than 200 different languages.
Multicultural Week will be launched with an art work by Shadow Theatre Delight on Monday 20 September. Commissioned by the Victoria University Student Union, this shadow act portrays the journey of students coming to Australia from different parts of the world, exploring the country’s cultures and traditions, joining VU, through to becoming alumni. Cultural Diversity Officer at the Student Union Ash Lukman said that the project brings together the VU values of being WEST - Welcoming, Ethical and Shaping the future Together.
“We also have video of students and staff telling what ‘multicultural’ means to them and wishing a everyone a happy Multicultural Week,” said Mr Lukman.
The Victoria Business Confucius Institute is hosting “Paint and Sip: Mid-Autumn Mooncake Festival”. This celebration is traditionally held in China to thank the gods and mark the end of the autumn harvest. Origami artist Chieko Hester will lead a session making Australian-themed origami. Current students who register for these events will receive all the materials they need to join in at home.
The VU Postgraduate Association is hosting “Sharing Your Culture”. This is open to current postgraduate students and participants receive a $25 grocery voucher so that they can cook a meal that represents their culture. Send a personal picture that represents your culture to and the most creative will win a double-value voucher.
The Christian Union Race Around the World requires teamwork from current students to answer clues and solve puzzles. Prizes to the group that wins.
Showcase your culture in whatever way is convenient for you with the International Student Association’s event. This is open to current international students and prizes are worth more than $200.
