Rebecca Sullivan is one of Australia’s most accomplished judoka and a proud Victoria University alum whose career is defined by determination, resilience and international success.
Rebecca rose to prominence in the late 1990s, becoming Australia’s leading athlete in the women’s half-lightweight division. She won three consecutive national titles between 1997 and 1999 and established herself as one of the country’s top competitors.
Her success extended to the international stage, where she placed seventh at the 1999 US Open and ninth at the 1999 World Championships in England. These performances ranked her among the top judoka in the world and positioned her strongly for Olympic selection.
In 2000 Rebecca faced a major challenge when she was initially overlooked for the Sydney Olympic Games despite being ranked first in Australia and ninth globally. Determined to ensure a fair selection process, she lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The court ruled in her favour after finding that incorrect points had been applied at the world championships, securing her place on the Olympic team.
At the Sydney Games she delivered a strong performance, winning her opening match against France’s Laetitia Tignola before facing two of the world’s top competitors.
Alongside her sporting career, Rebecca pursued academic excellence, completing both a Bachelor and Master of Applied Science in Psychology at Victoria University.
Her induction into the Victoria University Sport Hall of Fame recognises her achievements in Australian judo and her determination in overcoming adversity to represent her country at the Olympic Games.
