Mike McKay OAM is one of Australia’s most celebrated rowers and a proud Victoria University graduate. As a founding member of the legendary Oarsome Foursome, he helped redefine Australian rowing and became one of the nation’s most decorated Olympians.

Mike represented Victoria in the prestigious King’s Cup 18 times between 1986 and 2004, winning an extraordinary 15 titles. His early international success included a silver medal at the 1985 Match des Seniors and both a World Championship title and Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1986.

His career reached iconic status as a member of the Oarsome Foursome alongside James Tomkins, Nick Green and Samuel Patten. The crew won back-to-back World Championships in 1990 and 1991 before claiming Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

The crew reunited for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics with Drew Ginn replacing Patten, once again winning gold. Mike was selected as Australia’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony.

He later returned to the men’s eight, helping Australia win silver at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and bronze at the Athens 2004 Olympics. Across five Olympic Games he won four medals – two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Beyond competition, Mike served on the Australian Olympic Committee Board and chaired the AOC Athletes’ Commission. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1997.

His induction into the Victoria University Sport Hall of Fame recognises his extraordinary achievements and his leadership within Australian sport.
