Larry Sengstock is one of Australian basketball’s most respected figures, known for his powerful presence on the court and his long and decorated international career.
After representing Queensland at junior level, Larry moved to Melbourne to join the St Kilda Saints and pursue university studies. His rise through the sport was rapid, and in 1977 he made his debut for the Australian Boomers.
At just 18 years old he was selected for the 1978 World Championship in the Philippines before ever representing Australia at junior level.
Larry played 456 National Basketball League games across a distinguished career with St Kilda, the Brisbane Bullets, the Gold Coast and the North Melbourne Giants. He won five NBL championships – two with St Kilda, two with Brisbane and one with North Melbourne.
Across his NBL career he scored 5,466 points and collected 3,221 rebounds, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dominant big men. His performance in the 1979 Grand Final earned him the inaugural NBL Grand Final Most Valuable Player award, and the league’s Grand Final MVP medal now bears his name.
Internationally, Larry represented Australia at four Olympic Games – 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1992 – as well as four FIBA World Championships. His strength, athleticism and competitive spirit made him one of the Boomers’ most formidable players.
His contribution to basketball has been recognised through numerous honours, including the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and induction into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.
After retiring from playing, Larry moved into sports administration and consulting, continuing to support the development of basketball in Australia.
His induction into the Victoria University Sport Hall of Fame recognises a career defined by excellence, leadership and a lifelong commitment to the sport.
