Kelvin Templeton is one of Australian football’s most influential figures, celebrated for his outstanding playing career and his leadership roles beyond the field. A proud Victoria University graduate, he combined elite sporting performance with a strong commitment to education and business leadership.
Born in 1956, Kelvin showed exceptional talent from a young age. At just sixteen he kicked 100 goals for Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley Football League, attracting the attention of Footscray. He joined the club in 1974 and made an immediate impact, kicking six goals on debut against Collingwood.
Kelvin quickly developed into one of the most dangerous forwards of his era. In 1976 he kicked 82 goals, and after an injury-affected 1977 season he returned in remarkable form in 1978, kicking 118 goals to lead the VFL goalkicking. His performance that year included a remarkable 15-goal game against St Kilda, featuring a record 24 scoring shots.
He topped the league’s goalkicking again in 1979 and, in 1980, was moved to centre half-forward – a change that highlighted his versatility and football intelligence. That same year he became the first forward to win the Brownlow Medal while still kicking more than 70 goals, an achievement unmatched in the modern era. A dual Coleman Medallist, Kelvin remains one of the Western Bulldogs’ most iconic players.
Injuries limited his playing time from 1981 onwards. After joining Melbourne in 1983, he retired from the VFL in 1986, leaving behind a legacy defined by strong marking, accurate kicking and an ability to influence games from anywhere in the forward line.
Following his playing career, Kelvin built a successful career in business and sports administration. He completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and later served as Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Swans, helping guide the club during an important period of development. He has also held senior roles in the private health sector and international business.
Kelvin was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2024. His induction into the Victoria University Sport Hall of Fame recognises both his exceptional playing career and his continued contributions to sport and leadership.
