Ali Abdo is one of Australia’s most accomplished wrestlers and a proud Victoria University graduate whose career spans more than two decades of international competition.
Growing up in Melbourne, Ali initially pursued Australian rules football before an injury led him to discover wrestling. His natural talent and determination quickly became evident, and by age 17 he was competing internationally at the 1998 Junior World Championships in Las Vegas.
At just 19, Ali represented Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as the nation’s sole competitor in Greco-Roman wrestling. He later competed in freestyle wrestling at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, cementing his reputation as one of Australia’s most dedicated wrestlers.
Beyond the Olympics, Ali represented Australia at numerous major international events. He placed fifth at the 2001 East Asian Games in Osaka and achieved podium finishes at several tournaments, including third place at the 2008 Canada Cup, the 2011 Commonwealth Championships and the African Championships.
Between 1998 and 2012, Ali dominated the Oceania region, winning multiple Oceania Championship titles and numerous Australian national championships. His long association with the national team made him a central figure in Australian wrestling for more than a decade.
Ali continued to train and compete into his thirties, qualifying for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
Alongside his athletic career, he pursued extensive academic study at Victoria University, completing qualifications in clinical sciences, rehabilitation and osteopathy. Today he works as a practising osteopath in Melbourne, specialising in athlete treatment and injury management.
Ali also contributes to the development of future wrestlers through the Melbourne Wrestling Academy, which he runs with his brother Bilal, a Commonwealth Games representative.
His induction into the Victoria University Sport Hall of Fame recognises both his achievements as a three-time Olympian and his ongoing commitment to supporting athletes and strengthening the sport of wrestling in Australia.
