Reasonable adjustments & inherent requirements

What are reasonable adjustments & inherent course requirements?

Reasonable adjustments are changes or supports put in place to help students with a disability participate in their studies on the same basis as other students. Reasonable adjustments are designed to reduce the impact of a health condition or disability, without compromising academic standards and inherent course requirements.

Inherent course requirements are the abilities, attributes, skills and behaviours needed to meet the learning outcomes of a course. Students who can meet an inherent requirement with the application of a reasonable adjustment are considered to be able to meet the inherent requirement.

Disability Action Plan

Victoria University aims to be a leader in inclusivity for people with a disability. In 2025 we published the first whole-of-organisation Disability Action Plan co-designed with staff and students with living experience of disability.

The Disability Action Plan, part of VU’s Progressive Inclusivity Framework 2026 – 2030, replaces the previous Student Accessibility Action Plan which was designed to remove barriers to access and participation for students with a health condition or disability.

Our new whole-of-organisation Disability Action Plan will continue to guide Victoria University in providing a supportive and inclusive educational experience for students and staff through specific actions addressing key priority areas.
