Putting theory into practice is the gateway to career success, says the latest participant of the Steve Myall law graduate program.

The 12-month paid internship gives Victoria University (VU) law graduates the opportunity to gain valuable legal experience and mentoring with Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) in Sunshine.

VU law graduate Levi Brookes gained ongoing employment following completion of his program.

The support foundation that the Steve Myall graduate law program provided me has been invaluable to my success. The program helped me to engage with my learning and take ownership of my work, so I could hit the ground running as a lawyer.

The program was created in memory of His Honour Mr Steve Myall, Magistrate at Sunshine and Werribee Courts, who made a significant contribution to the people and communities of Melbourne’s west. It is designed for law graduates committed to improving justice outcomes for the people of the western region of Melbourne.

VLA Managing Lawyer Liz Hughes says the program strengthens the partnership between VU and VLA. It not only helps students to develop their practical legal skills, but also decide on their career direction.

Victoria University and VLA have a shared goal to create practical opportunities for students in the west. Graduate programs can help students decide what area of law to practice in, or whether they want to practice law at all. It can be hard to know what you want to do with your law degree until you get to do something practical.

Since the program began in 2020, both VU graduates, Sinaa Hangar and Levi Brookes, have obtained ongoing legal roles.

Supervising lawyer Vincent Vuu shared how Levi gained the position and how he’s developed as a result of the program.

Levi showed through his previous role in hospitality management that he could deal with a wide range of people. He’s made the most of his opportunities and secured a role as a lawyer. We encourage students to apply – it’s a unique gateway into the profession and a chance to work with outstanding people.

VU is highly regarded in industry for being well connected with thousands of partner organisations, giving students access to extensive workplace experiences to ensure they are job ready.

It’s no wonder VU is ranked number one in Australia for employability skills (2020 QILT Employer Satisfaction Survey), for graduate attributes including leadership, working under pressure, understanding the nature of business and showing initiative.
