Returning to study

Studying science at VU
Victoria University has thousands of mature-age students who have returned to study. Your options range from VCE studies to degrees.
You are an 'adult returning to study' if you are 18 years of age on 1 January in the year of enrolment and have been out of school for at least a year.
Some mature-age students have never completed secondary school, some are already in the workforce, and some are returning to study after a long break. There are many reasons our mature-age students choose to return to study.

Pathways
Victoria University is one of the few universities in Australia to offer both higher education degrees and TAFE vocational education. That means you can do an apprenticeship, certificate or a diploma followed by a degree or postgraduate studies at VU. You can enter a study pathway from various points and exit once you’ve achieved your goals.
VCE at VU
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is a senior secondary school qualification which is a prerequisite for entry into degree courses. VCE at VU College is the same VCE course offered in secondary schools tailored for adults returning to study.
If you are an adult returning to study* you can complete VCE in one year full time or part time over two or more years.

Credit for prior learning
Through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, VU can credit academic, professional or life skills that are assessed and determined to be equivalent to the skills or knowledge required for a qualification. This could substantially reduce how long you need to study to complete your course.
The evidence you provide for credit could include academic transcripts, work experience or statements from supervisors identifying your skills and capability.
How to apply
Application procedures vary depending on what you’re studying and when you apply. Some courses require you to submit an application directly to VU while others require you to apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
Selection officers consider a range of factors when determining if an application is successful, not just previous academic performance. Some courses allow you to lodge a personal statement about why you want to do the course and why you should be selected; others use folios, interviews or subject-specific tests. Once your application is assessed as successful, you’ll receive an offer to enrol.
Financing your study
Costs of study vary depending on what you study. All Australian citizens are eligible for Commonwealth Government-funded loans (FEE-HELP for Higher Education and VET-HELP for TAFE). That means you can defer your fees and pay them back through the Australian Tax Office when your income reaches a certain amount. VU also has a wide range of scholarships for TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate students.
