Undergraduate scholarships

Victoria University (VU) offers a range of equity and merit scholarships for undergraduate students who are in financial need. You need to be enrolled in an undergraduate degree, honours program or Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education.

The equity and merit scholarships for undergraduate students have different eligibility requirements, value and application processes.

VU Access Scholarships

VU Access scholarship applications are closed for 2013.

Students already in receipt of a Commonwealth Scholarship from VU (Education Costs or Accommodation) or from Centrelink (Start Up or Relocation) are NOT eligible to apply for a VU Access Scholarship.

Soroptimist scholarship for Indigenous Australian women

Soroptimist International supports an Indigenous female student to complete undergraduate study at VU by providing financial support.

Eligibility

To apply for the Soroptimist scholarship you must:

  • be a female student of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, and be identified as an Indigenous Australian by the community in which you do live or have lived
  • have completed at least first year of a Victoria University undergraduate degree with a minimum Credit (60% or higher) in at least 75% of the units
  • be enrolling into second or third year of the same program
  • be enrolled full time.

Value

The Soroptimist scholarship is valued at $2,750 each year for a maximum of two years.

How to apply

This scholarship is offered every two years through VTAC. Applications for 2013 are now closed.

You only need to submit one application for all scholarships available. Your application will be assessed against all of the scholarships available. Your application will be ranked and scholarships will be allocated to students most in need of financial support. If eligible, you will receive only one scholarship.

VU Western Chances scholarships

Western Chances support students from the western region of Melbourne to study at secondary level. Scholarships are provided in partnership with VU for students to continue tertiary studies.

Eligibility

To apply for a VU Western Chances scholarships you must:

  • have received a Western Chances Scholarship in your secondary school studies
  • be enrolled full-time in a VU course.

Value

Each year, we provide up to 25 VU Western Chances Access scholarships, valued at $1,000 per year for up to four years.

Each year we provide 3 VU Western Chances Success scholarships, one in each of the three higher education faculties (these scholarships cover the cost of your course fees for the duration of your undergraduate degree).

Commonwealth scholarships

The new Commonwealth Scholarship program commenced 1 April 2010. New Commonwealth Scholarships (Start Up and Relocation scholarships) are now paid to eligible higher education students by Centrelink. You do not need to apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship. Further information is available from Centrelink.

If you are a VU Student who is already in receipt of a Commonwealth Scholarship (Commonwealth Education Cost or Commonwealth Accommodation) you will continue to be paid by us (Victoria University), until:

  • you are no longer eligible, or
  • eight scholarship payments have been made, or
  • you complete your course.

Value

  • Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) will be worth $2,377 in 2012
  • Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) will be worth $4,754 in 2012

Students already in receipt of a Commonwealth Scholarship from VU (Education Costs or Accommodation) or from Centrelink (Start Up or Relocation) are NOT eligible to apply for a VU Access Scholarship.

Indigenous Commonwealth scholarships

If you are an Indigenous student you will need to apply for Commonwealth and University scholarships through the university. If you are commencing in an undergraduate course and have relocated from a regional or remote area you can apply for an Indigenous Access Scholarship (IAS) payment of $4,485.

If you are eligible for an IAS will also receive an Indigenous CECS (Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship) as well as an Indigenous CAS if you are eligible (Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship). ICECS will be worth $2,377 in 2012, ICAS will be worth $4,754 in 2012.

VU Achievement scholarships

Victoria University (VU) offers a new program of merit scholarships known as the VU Achievement Scholarships.

Each year, every secondary school in the western region council areas of Brimbank, Hobson's Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham will be offered two scholarships:

  • One for the highest achieving year 12 student who enrols in a VU Higher Education (HE) course
  • One for the highest achieving year 12 student who enrols in a VU Vocational Education (VE) course.

Health, Engineering & Science ATAR scholarship

The Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science are please to award a number of scholarships up to the value of $20, 000 to students who have achieved an ATAR (previously ENTER) of 80 or above.

Scholarships are available for:

  • Bachelor of Science (specialisations in biotechnology, chemistry or environmental management)
  • Bachelor of Science (nutrition, food and health science)
  • Bachelor of Information Technology (network and system computing)
  • Bachelor of Engineering and Science (sports engineering, electrical and electronic)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (architectural, building, civil, electrical and electronic, mechanical).

Eligibility

To apply for a Health, Engineering & Science ATAR scholarship you must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or hold a bridging or temporary visa
  • have achieved an ATAR (previously ENTER) of 80 or above at VCE or Year 12 level in 2011 or 2012.

Value

  • $5000 each year for the duration of the course, dependent on continued academic excellence
  • Scholarship funds will be paid at the commencement of each semester.

Engineering & Science VE Pathway scholarship

Students who have completed Vocational Education (VE) studies at VU and who enrol full time into any Science or Engineering course can apply for a Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science VE Pathway scholarship.

Eligibility

To apply for a VE Engineering or Science scholarship you must:

  • have successfully completed a Vocational Education course at VU
  • be enrolled full-time in a science or engineering course in the College of Engineering & Science at Victoria University.

Value

  • Annual payment of $1000 for two or three years of study depending on the course of enrolment
  • Scholarship funds will be paid after successful completion of each year of study.

David Hay Scholarships for Freight, Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain students

The David Hay Scholarship is an award made available by the generosity of Christine Hay, David Hay’s widow, who wishes to assist those wanting to pursue further studies, from Diploma to PhD, specialising in Freight, Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain in 2013. Preference will be given to applicants “who aspire to advance their career in the Supply Chain, Logistics and Transport industry”.

Eligibility

To apply for the David Hay Scholarship you must be:

  • Australian citizen or a permanent resident in Australia
  • The applicant must have the capacity to undertake study in the agreed period and abide by the rules of the David Hay Endowment Fund
  • The David Hay Scholarship is designed to support the person not the firm; therefore employers cannot use this scholarship as a substitute for funding professional development.

Value

  • Scholarship will fund the course fees for the successful applicant(s)
  • Additional support may be offered as determined by the David Hay Endowment Management Committee, after having regard to all relevant factors including the individual Scholar’s personal circumstances

The Victoria University Sport Scholarships

The Victoria University Sport Scholarships and elite athlete support program is in place to assist outstanding VU athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite level sport and to assist emerging student athletes in their aim to perform at the elite sporting level. Sport Scholarships aim to assist student athletes with financial and in kind support with respect to competition and training fees, health and fitness, international travel and University representation.

Scholarship Categories

Elite High Performance Scholarship

The Elite High Performance Scholarships are the University’s Peak sporting scholarships awarded to one (1) outstanding male and female student athlete.

Emerging Elite Scholarship

The Emerging Elite Scholarships are for emerging student-athletes demonstrating significant potential to reach elite levels. Available for two (2) males and two (2) females.

Aspiring Elite (Equity based)

These Scholarships are awarded to students who come from one or more defined equity or personal disadvantage groups and who have the potential to reach the elite level in their sport as per emerging elite category. Equal scholarships are provided to males and females, targeting new students with at least 70% drawn from the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Available to six (6) students (minimum two (2) female). Equity groups may include: Indigenous Australian decent, non- English speaking background, challenging family circumstances, financially disadvantaged, regional or remote origin, disability or medical condition.
