Albert Coates Memorial Trust for Paramedicine Scholarship
The Albert Coates Memorial Trust is proudly supporting scholarships for paramedicine students who have successfully completed their first year of Bachelor of Paramedicine and are enrolled in their second year. The scholarships will support students facing financial challenges to complete their degree and enter the workforce.
About Albert Coates
A mentor of Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop, Sir Albert Coates was described at his memorial service as “a master surgeon, soldier, teacher, orator and ambassador.” Coates’ journey began when he enlisted as a medical orderly in WWI.
After the war, he went on to study medicine and successfully gained degrees in Doctor of Medicine in 1926 and Master of Surgery in 1927.
He was appointed Honorary Surgeon to Outpatients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and became one of Australia’s pioneers in the field of neurosurgery.

Eligibility
The Albert Coates Memorial Trust scholarship will be for applicants who meet the following criteria:
- Successful completion of first year in the Bachelor of Paramedicine and enrolled in second year studies
- Demonstrated financial challenges
- Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in paramedicine
- Demonstrated knowledge of the life of Albert Coates
- Completion of all questions in the applicant portal
Value
This scholarship is valued at $5,000
Scholarships will be paid in two instalments, subject to satisfactory academic progression.
- First instalment of $2,500 to be paid after Semester 1, Block 2 census in second year of study
- Final instalment of $2,500 Semester 1, Block 2 census in third year of study.

Assessment & selection
Applications will be shortlisted by a representative of the VU Scholarships Office. Shortlisted applicants will then be reviewed by a panel of representatives from the VU Scholarships Office and the VU Advancement Office.
