With an interest in criminal justice, James Dib was drawn to his VU degree due to its practical learning opportunities and strong career prospects.
“VU embraces students from diverse backgrounds no matter their education or experience. This resonated with me as during school I hadn't been top of the class, but I knew I had the ability to better myself in higher education. I also earned a VU scholarship, which helped a lot with expenses like textbooks and a laptop.
During my degree I completed a 200-hour placement at the Department of Justice and Community Safety at community correctional services, which led to me being offered a job there as a case officer before I finished my degree, and I've since been promoted to case manager. The placement, along with the opportunity to sit in court hearings and other practical experiences helped me become a confident practitioner of the criminal justice system.
I got to showcase the skills I learnt in the classroom in a professional environment, while gaining great professional networks.
It’s so important for students to get opportunities like these to ensure they’re career ready once they graduate.
I know personally I have grown so much since commencing my degree and made friends for life.”
