Laser focused on a skincare career

Chloe Payne
The dermal clinic here at VU is very student-run. We do all the treatments and check in with our supervisors, so it’s really interesting to be getting that experience.

Bachelor of Dermal Sciences

Dermal sciences student Chloe Payne shares what she loves about skin treatment, working with lasers and practical learning in the VU dermal clinic.

"During high school, I always liked skin and skin treatment. So when I came across the Bachelor of Dermal Sciences it caught my attention and I just went for it.

"I love learning all the different types of skin treatments, and all the lasers that can be used for different types of skin conditions, pigmentation, vascular or just hair removal. It's very interesting.

"The City Tower is so beautiful. It's such a nice place to come and study, and we're always in these rooms high up, so you can always see a nice view."

Practical learning & real-world experience

"The dermal clinic here at VU is student-run. We do all the treatments and check in with our supervisors, so the teachers sign off on everything before we do it. It’s really interesting to be getting that experience.

"I love doing laser for vascular (conditions affecting the blood vessels), because you can see it disappear straight away – so it’s very cool.

"Most of our placement experience is here in the clinic, but I did also do an external placement with a plastic surgeon back home in Horsham, where I’m originally from. That was really fun. I got to watch him cut out some cancers, so that was interesting."

Lots of career paths to choose from

"When I graduate, I really want to work with a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist and do the medical-grade laser and skin treatments that can be done under their supervision.

"My advice for anyone thinking about doing dermal science is to go for it. It’s very interesting. There are so many different pathways you can take, from wound healing to helping with reconstruction, to more of the aesthetic side with a plastic surgeon. There’s really a wide range of careers it can lead to."
