This event has already taken place.

Tuesday 3 December 2013 to Thursday 5 December 2013

The Victoria Institute will host the 2013 (Advancement via Individual Determination) AVID Summer Institute from Tuesday, 3 December to Thursday, 5 December, in Melbourne.

This is the second year that The Victoria Institute is hosting AVID's flagship professional learning experience, which is an essential component of the AVID university-readiness system.

At the Institute, the latest AVID explicit teaching strategies are modelled and practised so that teachers and school leaders can implement them in their schools immediately.

The Institute is building the AVID national and international professional learning community of teachers, school leaders and students.

The Victoria Institute, supported by the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) funding and collaborating with AVID Australia schools and universities, is leading the research around the implementation of AVID in Australia.

Claire Brown, Associate Director of The Victoria Institute, said the event offers educators from around the world a great opportunity to meet, share, learn and strategise how to best implement this unique system in their schools.

"The Summer Institute is an opportunity to build better learning outcomes for diverse and disadvantaged students, and The Victoria Institute is proud to be part of it.

The program equips low SES and under-achieving students with the academic, social and emotional skills to be successful at university.

Participants will learn skills and strategies over the three days which can immediately be applied to any classroom in Australia. This will improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools, particularly benefiting under-achieving students."

AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a university-readiness system with primary, secondary and tertiary programs. It has achieved great success in improving education outcomes for all students, especially for diverse and disadvantaged students, for over 30 years in the USA. There are currently over 700,000 AVID students across the USA.
