Kumi is a research fellow in Governance Research Program at Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities.

She started her career as an accountant in Sri Lanka where she worked as the Chief accountant at the Rural Development Program at Sarvodaya in Sri Lanka. Kumi continued her accountancy work in Australia for the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce, Amcor Australasia and TR corporation. 

In 2008, she joined the Centre for Corporate Governance at Victoria University as a research fellow to pursue research in the area of corporate governance.
