What if I change my mind about what I want to study?

Not sure about your career goals? Worried you’ll change your mind later?

Don’t worry – that's completely normal. In fact, the average person changes careers five to seven times in their life.

The idea that you'll choose one perfect career at seventeen and stick to it forever is more myth than reality.

Your career journey is going to evolve, and that’s something to embrace.

Why it’s perfectly ok (and common) to change your mind

Your interests evolve as you learn more about yourself and the world. The subjects you love in high school might not be the same ones you want to study at uni. And sometimes, the course you pick at seventeen doesn’t fit at nineteen. Or at twenty five. Or at fifty! That’s okay: it’s all part of figuring out who you are and what you want.

Uni can be a place of discovery. A chance to explore, to test out different areas, and to see where your strengths and passions lie. What feels right at one stage of your life might not fit later – and that’s not failure, it’s growth.

Employers get it too. They’re not necessarily looking for someone who has followed a straight line their whole life. Most employers value flexibility, adaptability and resilience – it shows you can learn, adjust, and bring fresh perspectives from different experiences.

Changing your mind shows you’re self-aware and willing to pursue what feels right.

How to make a change without starting over

One of the biggest worries students have about changing their mind is the fear of “losing time” or “starting from scratch.” But remember that every learning experience adds value and this gets recognised.

Previous subjects or units you’ve studied can count as credit toward your new course. This means your hard work doesn’t go to waste – it can even shorten your new degree.

VU recognises prior learning, including TAFE, uni, short courses, and work and life experience. That recognition means your path forward can be smoother than you think.

This means you can change direction without stopping your momentum. For example, you might move from TAFE to an undergraduate degree, or switch between faculties if your interests have shifted.

Talking to an advisor early is key. They’ll help you map out exactly what transfers, what doesn’t, and what your options look like moving forward.

At VU, switching unis or shifting courses is made as simple as possible, with dedicated support to guide you through every step of the process. The aim is to help you keep moving forward, even if your direction changes.

Is it worth it?

If your current course feels wrong, forcing yourself to stick with it isn’t always the best option. Pushing through just because you’ve already started might seem like the “safe” thing to do, but it can actually make you feel stuck or unmotivated in the long run.

Changing direction doesn’t mean failure. It means you’re listening to yourself and taking charge of your future. That kind of self-awareness will serve you well far beyond uni.

Employers want problem-solvers and learners, not people who never change. The ability to shift, rethink, and explore new opportunities shows initiative and adaptability – qualities that are highly valued in every industry.

You can get help!

Remember, you don’t have to make these decisions on your own. Whether you’re unsure about switching courses, moving from TAFE to uni, or just rethinking your career plans, there’s always someone who can help.

VU advisors are here to talk through your options and help you find a new path toward a future that fits you.

They’ll get into the nitty-gritty of credit transfers, explain your pathway options, and help set up a plan that feels right for you – so you can move forward with confidence, not confusion.

Your change = your story

Changing your mind isn’t a setback, it’s a step forward. It means you’re listening, evolving, adapting and constantly following your strengths and passions. VU students like Werner, Jing, Michael, and Elizabeth are proof that switching paths can lead to thriving, meaningful careers.
