This year marks the first season for Bulldogs new coach Nathan Burke. The former AFL great said he was excited about the opportunity ahead.

“I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to coach the Western Bulldogs AFLW team for the next two seasons. I can't wait to work with the athletes and help them become the best footballers and people they can be. The Bulldog faithful loves their AFLW team and we will continue to do the red, white and blue proud,” Burke said.

Ellie Blackburn takes the lead

The Bulldogs also have a new leadership group, appointing inaugural AFLW player and Bulldogs champion Ellie Blackburn to lead the team in a standalone capacity this season, after sharing the responsibility last year.

“I’ve been with the Western Bulldogs since our AFL Women’s team’s inception, and it not only holds a special place in my heart. It's a place I absolutely love being a part of. I wear our colours really proudly every time I get to represent our football club.”

Blackburn will be supported by Brooke Lochland, who has been elevated to the vice-captaincy. Lauren Spark has been added to the six-player leadership group, joining Izzy Huntington, Kirsty Lamb and Hannah Scott.

The Dogs show promise for the 2020 season, building confidence from a strong pre-season where they were victorious against the Geelong Cats in a practice match 8.11 (59) to 7.5 (47) at VU Whitten Oval. A new brand of Bulldogs’ footy was clearly visible, with fast running and quick ball movement key parts of their game.
