Study abroad

Study abroad for a semester or a year with an institution if your choice.

The Study Abroad program is very similar to the student exchange program, with two major differences:

  1. Tuition fees for that semester will need to be paid directly to the institution.
  2. You can choose any institution that accepts study abroad students (as long as your course coordinator agrees that the units you choose are acceptable).

Why study abroad?

See the world and experience a different culture.

By studying overseas you can:

  • develop a network of contacts and extend your career opportunities
  • learn a language and enhance your communication skills
  • develop life experiences and self confidence
  • receive credits towards your Victoria University degree*.

* A study plan must be prepared in consultation with your course coordinator to ensure overseas units are comparable to those you would be studying at Victoria University.

Are you eligible?

To be eligible to study on an exchange program you must have:

  • achieved a credit average
  • completed one year of undergraduate study at Victoria University or
  • completed one semester of postgraduate study at Victoria University.

Select a university or institution

Before you start the application process, you will need to select an institution to study with. You will need to:

  • Find an institution that interests you.
  • Make sure that institution accepts study abroad students
  • Find units (or subjects) that align with your area of study (usually on the institutions website)
  • Prepare information for your course coordinator. Unit content will need to be matched to units within your course, you will need to provide information such as assessment requirements and learning outcomes for each unit.

Make sure you check the language requirements for selected subjects or units. For non-English speaking countries it is often possible to study your subjects in English while taking the opportunity to learn another language.

You will need to complete a study plan (included in the application form) with your unit coordinator. You can view the Victoria Abroad study plan guide for advice on completing your study plan.

Costs and financial assistance

You may also be eligible for a variety of funding schemes to current students going overseas either on exchange or a short term overseas study program.
