Reconciliation Week: Smoking Ceremony & Welcome to Country
This event has already taken place.
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia every year from 27 May to 3 June and VU will be hosting a range of activities to mark the event.
We will feature a Smoking Ceremony and a Welcome to Country by the traditional lands of the Boonwurrung and Woiwurrung people of the Kulin nations at VU at Metrowest on 27 May.
We will also host a forum discussing constitutional change, and the Koorie Night Market.
Smoking Ceremony & Welcome to Country
Smoking ceremonies involve smouldering various native plants to produce smoke. It's believed this has cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits. A Welcome to Country is a ceremony performed by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people to welcome visitors to their traditional land.
Time: 11.30am – 12.00noon Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country

Forum discussion constitutional change
We will also host a forum discussing constitutional change, from 12.30pm – 2.00pm.
Speakers include:

- Shireen Morris, Constitutional Reform Research Fellow, Cape York Institute

The Koorie Night Market
The Koorie Night Market is a moveable feast of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, crafts, food, music and dance.
The market moves all across Victoria on a regular basis starting in the afternoon and running into the evening. Save the date, more details to follow.
