SWIRL: Two decades of unplanned consequences

This event has already taken place.

Thursday 26 June 2014

Professor Pat Drake, Dean, College of Education, invites you to participate in the 2014 Diamond Series.

SWIRL (Story writing in remote locations), is a literacy re-engagement program aimed at Aboriginal children in remote Australian communities. In its 19th year, with the original aim of seeing Aboriginal children's faces and the literature they use to learn to read, the unplanned outcomes have been more dramatic than the main plan.

This presentation will look at the effects of the program on those involved, many of whom claim that SWIRL has changed their lives. Aboriginal young people have stayed engaged with ex SWIRL students for the total length of the program. Further, SWIRL students have graduated and returned to the Northern Territory as teachers, and stay many years longer than regular recruits.

The discussion will be lead by Lawrence Mahon from the College of Education.

SWIRL demonstrates how democratic classroom management can be engaging, rewarding and successful.
