Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to apply mathematical analysis, graphical and software techniques to engineering problems. It includes exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric equations involving single and double angles, sequences and series, two-dimensional vector analysis, complex numbers, determinants and matrices.
The unit applies to engineering or related activities requiring specific mathematical techniques and is suitable for people giving technical support to design, operations or maintenance activities and those pursuing technical qualifications and careers at paraprofessional or technician level.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • solving mathematical problems using software
  • validating software results of simple examples analytically and/or graphically
  • manipulating values using decimal, binary and hexadecimal number systems on at least two occasions
  • graphing and analysing exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions for solutions on at least two occasions
  • using the techniques of sequences and series to solve simple mathematical problems on at least two occasions
  • using the techniques of two-dimensional vectors to solve mathematic and applied problems on at least two occasions
  • using determinant and matrix analysis to solve algebraic and vectorial problems on at least two occasions
  • using probability to assess likely occurrences.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
