The unholy alliance: Teachers and youth workers making a difference at Harvester Technical College

This event has already taken place.

Thursday 18 September 2014

Professor Pat Drake, Dean, College of Education, invites you to participate in the 2014 Diamond Series.

In 2011, VU's Youth Work team began work with Harvester Technical College. The aim was to place youth workers at the school to deliver a whole range of co-curricula programs, including:

  • breakfast club
  • lunch time activities
  • a mental fitness program
  • student leadership programs.

Youth Work students also worked alongside Harvester students, to support them in removing any barriers to their success in education that they may be experiencing such as income support, housing, family and mental health.

In 2012, we built a Youth Work Clinic at Harvester Technical College to deliver a broad range of programs. The outcomes have been terrific:

  • VU students gained valuable experience
  • teachers working alongside youth workers grew their understanding of the value of their contribution
  • compromises on issues of student discipline, management and support were sought and conceded on both sides.

Most importantly, the project can evidence how the Clinic set of programs has improved the connection and retention of young people to their education at Harvester Technical College.

Associate Professor Robyn Broadbent will share some of these experiences and outcomes.
