Mathematics as a human activity

This event has already taken place.

Tuesday 8 October 2013

Part of the 2013 Diamond Series, Pat Drake and David Gough will present Mathematics as a human activity.

Number songs and games are part of the cultural traditions of pre-school children. Being quantitatively literate is closely associated with life chances. Most workplaces demand some mathematical activity.

Yet mathematics seems difficult for so many, with concerns centring around both the overall level of mathematical attainment and participation and the relatively small numbers coming through with advanced level skills.

What is this all about?

This presentation and discussion will be about how doing maths relates to our day to day lives. Despite the anxieties many people feel about maths, it is central to so much of human activity.

Discussion topics

  • What does effective maths learning feel like?
  • How can it be developed and supported?
