Telling our stories

This event has already taken place.

Thursday 15 August 2013

Part of the 2013 Diamond Series, Karen Charman and Maureen Ryan will discuss the public representation of art, artifacts, objects and their associated stories.

Maureen Ryan established Gallery Sunshine Everywhere five years ago to share the stories of students.

The gallery regularly exhibits artwork of pre, primary and secondary school students. Many stories were told in the Houseboxes Project where the diversity of Melbourne's west was represented by over fifty cultural backgrounds (from Yorta Yorta to Timor Leste and South Sudan) in the houses created in families, schools and the broader community.

Karen Charman has worked for the last six years alongside students in a curriculum approach, and Learning and Teaching in Public Spaces that culminates in the representation of immigration stories in museums.

This work has received a grant from the Office of Learning and Teaching resulting in the successful migration of this approach to pre-service education courses in Brisbane and Bathurst.
