The Victoria Institute hosted a performance by Way Out West (WOW) a performing and visual arts group for adults with an intellectual disability.
The performance took place on Friday 25 July, 6.30 - 8pm as part of the Disability Studies in Education Conference (DSE14).
Professor Roger Slee, Director of the Victoria Institute said 'DSE conferences are renowned for shaping the future practice and thinking on the key issues facing disability studies in education. Way Out West’s performance was a great fit for our conference and a real highlight for everyone on the Friday night.'
WOW artists Christopher O'Keeffe, Ned Fagan, Natalya Lopez, Sarah Ellis and Marc Sorbello dedicated themselves to preparing for the event and were thrilled to be part of the conference.
WOW developed The Feast: a royal theatrical performance, which was performed at the Sunshine Festival in 2013. The Feast will be performed again in November 2014 at La Mama Courthouse.
Friday night’s performance at the Conference provided a great snapshot, not to mention a sneak preview, of the work Way Out West are currently developing.
'Victoria University has strong links with the west', said Dr Tim Corcoran, Senior Research Fellow with the Victoria Institute and Conference Convenor. 'Way Out West is a real home grown performing group so it made sense to have them perform at our DSE 14 conference. We all saw something very special.'
WOW is a best practice artistic program run by Arts Access Victoria (AAV) which provides people with disability the opportunity to celebrate and create art. Each year AAV works with more than 1000 artists with a disability.
