VU students of African descent celebrate World Cup

Victoria University students of African descent are celebrating the first time the FIFA World Cup is held on their native soil.

Hamza Wariyo, president of the newly formed VU Australian African Students Association said members will support their homelands in the football showdown, as well as Australia's Socceroos.

The Association's 45 members have come to Australia from various countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and South Africa (some of the African countries competing in the finals) as well as Horn of Africa countries.

The group has organised some indoor student soccer matches with fellow students during the tournament to add to the FIFA fun.

Club members in traditional African dress will gather this week to sing, dance and celebrate the start of the World Cup.
