VU athletes take top spot at Southern University Games

Victoria University won two of the three peak awards at the 2009 Southern University Games held in Melbourne this week.

VU finished first in points to take out the Overall Games Championship, as well as the Overall Winner, based on per-capita placing.

VU also won four gold medals - for women's basketball and women's netball, mixed netball, and men's soccer, in addition to taking silver in men's AFL and men's soccer.

As the regional champion among 13 universities from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, VU is now well placed for the 2009 Australian University Games, to be held on the Gold Coast from 27 September to 2 October, 2009.

Professor Brian King, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor Students, said the great result and spirited student participation was testimony to the hard work and organisation both on and off the field by student participants, student team managers and staff.

The University Games aim to promote and increase student participation in activities through competitive sport, emphasising the social and interactive side of such participation.
