Victoria University will be hosting the second AVID Australia Summer Institute at Footscray Park Campus on November 27 - 29.
The Victoria Institute was the successful recipient of a competitive HEPPP funding grant to implement and research the application of AVID in Australia.
AVID is a well established university preparation program in the USA, designed to increase the number of students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds aspiring to, accessing and achieving success at university.
A team of VU staff recently attended the AVID Summer Institute in Dallas, Texas;
- Associate Professor Katie Hughes, Claire Brown, Adam Usher and David Lee from the Victoria Institute, together with teachers from Wodonga Middle Years College are trained staff developers and taught in the tertiary strands at the US Summer Institutes
- Colleagues from the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science including Dr. Kylie O'Brien, Monika Taylor and Dr. Kathy Tangalakis, and the Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development including Dr. Mary-Rose McLaren and Dr. Brian Zammit, attended the Institute to learn more about the AVID system and to explore the ways in which it can be embedded in first year units.
The VU team was also accompanied by the Regional Director of Education for the Western Metropolitan Region, Katherine Henderson, and senior staff from three of the nine schools who are getting ready to implement AVID in 2013:
- Williamstown High School
- Galvin Park Secondary College
- Point Cook Secondary College.
They were all excited by their experiences in Dallas and are working hard to put things in place for a great 2013.
