Tuesday 13 May 2014

The Victoria Institute invites you to attend 'First-in-family university student success: International research and design', presented by Associate Professor Airini from The University of Auckland on Tuesday, 13 May 2014.

The seminar explores an international study, highlighting the factors that influence the success of first-in-family university (FIFU) students.

The FIFU research team and co-authors of this presentation include:

  • Dr Amani Bell (University of Sydney, Australia)
  • Dr 'Ema Wolfgramm-Foliaki (The University of Auckland)
  • Associate Professor Elisa Birch (University of Western Australia)
  • Dr Roisin Kelly-Laubscher ((The University of Cape Town, South Africa)
  • Prof Moragh Paxton (The University of Cape Town, South Africa)
  • Dr Lorri Santamaria (The University of Auckland)
  • Cara Stanley (The University of California, Berkeley)

This interdisciplinary team-based project is currently in progress monitoring a global sample of 420 participants, spanning across six universities, in five different countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the USA).

Associate Professor Airini, an Adjunct Professor, believes that understanding the issues FIFU students face are particularly important for Australia and New Zealand.

'Australia and New Zealand both have ambitious higher education agendas. Therefore, from a national strategic perspective, it is crucial to understand the challenges experienced by FIFU students,' she said.

'Our research design will provide quantitative and qualitative evidence about the influences, information, and investment approaches affecting FIFU student participation.'

Associate Professor Airini is the Co-Principal Investigator (with Dr 'Ema Wolfgramm-Foliaki)for the international FIFU research project, funded by the World Universities Network. Airini's research interests focus on utilising education policy and university practices to ensure everyone has access to education, including Pasifika students and Maori students.

This activity is supported through the Australian Government's Collaborative Research Networks (CRN) program.
