Sam Hargreaves

Let's go to the VU data lab segment, really look forward to this every single week where we crunch the numbers thanks to the VU data lab, the finals countdown partner Victoria University. Now Sam Macintosh of Victoria University and Western Bulldogs List and Recruitment Analyst always trips me out that word has done a deep dive into how the Dogs got the better of Essendon in the second half of the Elimination Final.

Let's just have a look at this Bob because it tells a fascinating story. This is the ball winning of the second half compared to the first half and who jumped up and really increased their numbers substantially in the second half of that game.

Bob Murphy

Yeah well as you can see from the very fancy data presented to us, Sam, Sam, I know quite well at Vic Uni full super football nerd is Sam but you can see that Jack Macrae, Adam Treloar had a huge lift in their performance Roarke Smith I think is one that, you know might have sort of surprised people just jumped up on them a little bit.

Sam Hargreaves

Yep

Bob Murphy

Taylor Duryea who's had a sensational season he's improved but across the board, it was the ability just to, to not just win the ball, but to be able to control it so that's the dog's hallmark of them at their very best. When the rain came tumbling down in Tassie last week, it was, it was almost music to the ears of the Dogs mids.

Sam Hargreaves

So we see that Treloar getting on the end of 1 there he had 18 disposed on the second half, but Jackson Macrae at 1st possession at stoppage 7 times, which is a massive number.

Bob Murphy

Yeah he's an incredible player Jack I think he had 36 touches without a mark, which is quite extraordinary. And one of the things that I noticed as a teammate and watching him now just take a look at how much punishment he takes.

Bob Murphy

He brings his teammates into the game with creativity, constantly being hit and tackled and shoved into the ground. He's so resilient such an important creative play for the dogs and just shows up at every week.

Sam Hargreaves

And one that went under the radar just a little bit was Rourke Smith the 5 second half intercepts were crucial in the times that Essendon were able to get inside Ford 50 Rourke Smith was phenomenal in that intercept role.

Bob Murphy

Yeah he is one of the players that the locker room barracks for Rourke Smith is a lovely, lovely for big heart, incredibly athletic It's sort of similar to Easton Wood in terms of his athletic ability so he can kind of play in a multiple set of positions which is you know that's what Luke Beveridge loves, loves players who can play in all different positions so he's massive second half last week, that'll give him huge confidence he might have a number of different roles tonight against the Lions.

Sam Hargreaves

Does he get Mickey as a nickname?

Bob Murphy

Well, I went with Mickey

Sam Hargreaves

Yeah.

Bob Murphy

So I, but I was the only one of course

Sam Hargreaves

Now come on

Bob Murphy

No, no one else knew about 9 and a half weeks, no one had watched it as many times as I had Sam

Sam Hargreaves

Yeah, now that's a shame really And one of the great nicknames goes.

Bob Murphy

Worth re-watching

Sam Hargreaves

Absolutely the wrestler

Bob Murphy

Yeah the wrestler in the latter years

Sam Hargreaves

Yeah Harley Davidson, the Barbara

Bob Murphy

Well he's had some howlers, let's be honest Mickey Rourke but he had some good ones there in the 80's

Screen depicts a outlining the player rating in terms of Ball Use by Quarter from opponent Essendon FC player, Darcy Parish during the Elimination Final.

Sam Hargreaves

Speaking of good 1's, Josh Dunkley is a good 1. Darcy Parish has had a brilliant year He was all Australian he's won three individual medals throughout the course of the year. He was the number one ball winner in the first and second quarter's ranked number one for ball use as well in that first half. Look what happens when Josh Dunkley goes and sits on him. He goes from first to last in that third quarter.

Bob Murphy

Yes, I mean that's, and we talk about midfield pressure all the time. And particularly the Bulldogs how if the midfield is putting enough pressure on the ball, how much it helps the defensive six, that just gives you a great example Darcy Parish was was running a muck in the first half and looked to be you know a match winner. Still had a great game, but just to nullify his effectiveness from the third quarter on was a pretty important role from Josh.

Sam Hargreaves

Yeah kept the six disposals in that quarter, a brilliant effort from Josh Dunkley, just showing his versatility as well as someone who can win it and then deny it at the other end. A big thank you to Victoria University and Sam Mackintosh, Brilliant effort for all those numbers in the VU data lab.
