Matthew Walsh is an accomplished executive leader with extensive experience shaping the financial and operational foundations that enable organisations to thrive.
His career spans multiple sectors – including finance, insurance, technology, education, health, logistics and the not‑for‑profit sector – where he has guided organisations through significant strategic change, large‑scale disruption and complex transformation. Matthew brings deep capability in managing private equity transitions, preparing companies for local and US listings, and leading an IPO.
Matthew has held senior financial and operational roles requiring a strong balance of strategic thinking and day‑to‑day performance management. He has served on boards as a director and company secretary, and regularly provided governance and financial oversight in executive roles. Prior to joining Victoria University, he was Chief Financial Officer at Open Universities Australia and held senior roles with Defence Health, BUPA and Austock, consistently contributing to improved performance, transparency and long‑term organisational resilience.
Matthew also brings unique experience from his time as Chief Financial Officer of the Collingwood Football Club—an appointment we acknowledge with good humour as we welcome him warmly to VU. As Chief Financial Officer, he leads the University’s financial strategy and operations, ensuring strong stewardship, sustainable growth and the financial settings required to support VU’s mission and communities.
