Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake a simple research project on a scientific issue and its impact on an individual or the community. It requires the ability to select and investigate a scientific issue and present the findings. It applies to learners wishing to improve their educational and vocational participation options in the science field.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • identify the main idea and key and supporting information in texts related to the issue
  • discuss and convey information about the impact of the health and wellbeing issue under investigation
  • collaborate with another person to form a plan
  • interpret information sourced in a digital format.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • strategies to make meaning
  • scientific terminology to enable information and ideas to be expressed verbally and in writing
  • components of a research project work plan

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
