Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to set computer controlled machines and processes.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • identifying and interpreting specifications, charts, lists, drawings and other applicable reference documents with respect to setting computer controlled machines and processes
  • selecting appropriate tool and work piece holding fittings and fixtures
  • mounting pre-set tooling and verifying tool offsets and/or datum settings against job sheets or instructions
  • undertaking numerical operations and calculations in carrying out setting of machines and processes
  • loading and verifying programs
  • conducting pre-start checks, including checking safety features and safety equipment, for correct operation
  • setting and adjusting machine
  • measuring and verifying first-off samples for conformance with specifications
  • identifying worn or damaged tooling and taking appropriate corrective action
  • instructing machine operator on the sequence of operations.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
