Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to set and edit computer controlled machines and processes.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • identifying and interpreting specifications, charts, lists, drawings and other applicable reference documents for computer controlled machine setting and editing
  • attaching ancillary devices in accordance with procedures
  • selecting appropriate tool and work piece holding fittings and fixtures
  • measuring, entering and verifying tool offsets
  • undertaking numerical operations and calculations in setting and editing machines and processes
  • conducting pre-start checks
  • producing and checking first-off samples for conformance with specifications
  • editing programs to ensure compliance with specifications
  • identifying worn or damaged tooling and taking appropriate corrective action
  • instructing machine operator on the sequence of operations.
