Overview

The foundation of successful construction management lies in the application of evidence and research. This unit provides students with the opportunity to conduct research in a specialised construction management area, enhancing their research, theoretical application, and professional skills. Guided by a supervisor, students develop a research question and undertake a comprehensive study that addresses contemporary issues in construction management, aiming to enrich the field with new insights and evidence-based conclusions. Students conduct desktop research and may also engage in fieldwork to gather data. Those undertaking fieldwork should demonstrate a high level of understanding of ethical fieldwork procedures and seek Human Ethics approval in a timely manner. The research culminates in a thesis. The final thesis reflects a rigorous analysis and synthesis of data. Students are required to submit a completed research thesis of 15,000 words by the end of the unit.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically review the literature associated with the proposed research project;
  2. Investigate, analyse, evaluate and synthesise complex information in their field of study;
  3. Design and elucidate the methodological components for the proposed research project;
  4. Implement appropriate methods to collect and analyse data, interrogate complex information, and draw defensible conclusions;
  5. Conduct an independent research project under supervision with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability; and
  6. Distil ideas and persuasively communicate research findings to an academic audience.
