Overview

This unit of study further develops students’ active listening skills and interpersonal problem-solving abilities. Students will develop their knowledge of interpersonal and communication theories, and learn about and begin to develop reflexivity and reflective practice as a basis for building relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Topics include: reflective practice; accurate assessment of presenting problems; interviewing skills; active listening skills; interpersonal problem-solving skills; and mediation skills. Class activities and assessments are designed to encourage students to examine a range of problem-solving approaches and to critically reflect on the application of their skills.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Exhibit appropriate responses to issues arising in interpersonal communication in different contexts including working with diverse populations.
  2. Exemplify proficiency in advanced active listening and problem-solving skills during complex interpersonal interactions;
  3. Apply reflexivity and reflective practice as a basis for professional work; and
  4. Critique and evaluate the application of advanced interpersonal skills in the context of communication and interpersonal theories, both individually and collaboratively.
