Overview

The Clinical Practice 2 unit is delivered in the clinical environment and provides students with osteopathic workplace experience through their clinical placement hours in the student led osteopathic clinics within the university and community sector. Students treat members of the public under the supervision of AHPRA registered health care providers clinical educators and contribute to the operational running of the clinic. Through exposure to a range of clinical presentations, healthcare settings, and diverse patient populations, students begin to develop the skills required to provide safe, person-centred osteopathic care. The clinical placement hours within this unit develop students’ capacity for teamwork, collaboration with peers and supervisors and communication with patients/clients and provides the environment for students to develop their confidence and maturity as an osteopathic practitioner.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Implement appropriate and safe person-centred clinical assessment for diverse populations in the clinical environment;
  2. Interpret clinical assessment to formulate differential diagnoses, working diagnosis and management plans that are person centred and account for individual biopsychosocial consideration; and
  3. Exemplify culturally responsive communication skills that meet the needs of diverse patient populations, including when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Assessment

The mini–Clinical Practice Assessment (MCPA) and Report of Findings (ROF) are assessments conducted in the clinical setting under the supervision of a clinical educator and evaluate the student’s ability to communicate with patients, gather a patient history and perform clinical examinations. During these patient interactions, the student is assessed on various aspects of their clinical skills and communication abilities.

Students are required to gain a pass in all assessment items, this includes completing the required 160 hours of clinical placement and submission of their completed workbook.
