Overview

This unit is designed to provide an introduction to Chinese with the emphasis on developing listening and speaking skills. Through the Chinese phonetic system, simple conversations, basic vocabulary and sentence patterns will be focused on so that a foundation to conduct a simple conversation is developed.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of Chinese language and its structure;
  2. Role-play basic greetings and expressions for daily communication;
  3. Apply basic structure in Chinese characters and recognize and write simple Chinese characters; and,
  4. Describe China’s contemporary culture and China's changing environment and current business practices.

Required reading

The course is based on the textbook, Experience Chinese-Business Communication in Chinese and exercise book. Lecture notes, selected articles and case studies will be provided by or referred to by lecturer. Students will receive a book loan from Victoria Business Confucius Institute if required.
