Overview

In this unit, you will investigate how advanced control systems and robotics enable intelligent machines capable of precision, adaptability, and autonomy. You will apply mathematical models and control theories, such as state-space and adaptive methods, to design systems that stabilise and optimise complex dynamics. Through simulation and laboratory practice, you will test and refine robotic controllers, integrating sensors, actuators, and algorithms to achieve efficient motion and coordination. The unit also explores safety, ethics, and social implications of automation, encouraging a reflective approach to technology’s role in enhancing human capability. By the end of this unit, you will be able to design, simulate, and evaluate robotic and control systems that demonstrate technical innovation, responsible practice, and professional integrity.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse dynamic systems through advanced control theory and simulation;
  2. Design adaptive control algorithms for robotic systems that ensure precision, safety, and sustainability;
  3. Integrate robotic kinematics, dynamics, and trajectory planning into real-time applications;
  4. Collaborate in modelling and testing activities using professional documentation and communication standards; and
  5. Evaluate robotic systems for ethical responsibility, inclusivity, and innovation in automation.
