Overview

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to contribute to basic mechanical system design. It includes the research of equipment functions and operational requirements, the preparation of preliminary documentation and the selection of components such as shafts, seals, bearings, fasteners, splines, cam, lifting systems, pneumatic circuits, hydraulic circuits, piping systems and mechanical features required to perform simple functions. The unit applies to engineering or related activities and is suitable for people giving technical support in manufacturing or engineering operations and those pursuing technical qualifications and careers at paraprofessional or technician level. All work is carried out under supervision.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • contributing to the design of basic mechanical systems on at least two occasions
  • researching equipment function and operational requirements
  • selecting appropriate components, assemblies and fasteners to perform the required function
  • preparing preliminary design documentation
  • issuing or filing completed documentation in accordance with SOPs.
Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
