Overview

In this unit students will investigate the history of 2D animation. The unit will explore the creation of 2D animation through a range of theoretical and practical techniques for a variety of animation practices. Students will study established 2D animation principles which will include; motion design, key frame animation, character rigging, staging and timing. Students will develop foundational skills and aesthetic knowledge, to initiate an animation from a conceptual idea through to a composed 2D animation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate the historical significance of animation as a narrative tool and identify successful approaches;
  2. Critically reflect and exhibit foundational principles of 2D animation;
  3. Adapt appropriate 2D animation techniques and design methodology;
  4. Design illustrated characters for 2D animation.
