Grasping the law

African communities have gained a better understanding of Australian law thanks to a pilot VU program.

Thanks to a six-month Victoria University pilot education program based at Footscray Nicholson Campus and the Morwell Community Centre in Gippsland, African communities now have a better understanding of the Australian justice system, while developing their English language skills and cultural awareness.

Leadership, Law and Language was delivered in the first half of 2012 by VU College’s School of Pathways and Transitions, in partnership with Latrobe City Council in eastern Victoria. Classes took place twice a week and offered a series of forums that gave students the opportunity to talk to legal specialists and African community leaders about legal issues.

VU’s Legal Studies tutors and former Sudanese refugees Bichok Kot and Peter Pal were engaged for their expertise in social science and policy, and international community development respectively.

Due to its success, funding has been granted for a further 14 week course to be delivered at GippsTAFE’s Morwell Campus and Community West, a multi-program neighbourhood house in St Albans.

VU College ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher Lynne Carolan, together with Kot and Pal will continue to offer their expertise in the program.
