What can I access

Victoria University Staff and Students


VU Staff and students are automatically members of the VU library. Your Victoria University Staff or Student card is your library card and can also be used for printing, copying and paying library infringements.

Username and password/PIN

  • ID Number: Student/Staff ID number
  • Library PIN: by default this is your date of birth in ddmmyyyy format.

Online resources

  • Library Search
    Search across the Library's online resources (including eBooks, eJournals & databases) and print collections (including books, journals, DVDs and multi-media).
  • eBooks
    These are online books that can be accessed online 24 hours a day seven days a week through Library Search.
  • eJournals
    The contents of eJournals can be searched through Library Search or you can browse for an eJournal by title.
  • Databases
    Access specialist subject, general and reference databases online.
  • eReserve
    Students can access course online readings and materials selected by their teachers. Academic staff can request to have materials added to the eReserve collection.
  • Online videos

My library

VU staff and students can use My Library to:

  • Create, modify and reset their library PIN.
  • Place holds & renew loans
  • Access eReserve
  • Save searches and receive email alerts
  • Access their reading history
  • Save and view lists

Borrowing from the print collections

Find Books, journals & DVDs/multi-media collections through Library Search

  • Items held at other library campuses can be requested by placing a hold on the item
  • Different loan periods apply to different item types
  • To avoid infringements return or renew material before they are due.

Special /research collections

VU Library has a number of Special collection & archives available to historians and researchers. Access conditions apply.

Accessing resources from other libraries

  • Document request service
    If an item is not held by the VU library it can be acquired through the library's document request service. Conditions apply.
  • Reciprocal borrowing
    VU students can borrow from other libraries through a number of local, national and international agreements with other academic libraries.

Off-shore students are automatically members of the VU library.

Username and password/PIN

Off-shore Staff at VU Partner Institutions

  • Offshore staff who teach VU students may register to access VU Library e-resources
  • A Library registration form must be completed and signed by the VU onshore program co-ordinator.
  • Your ID number and PIN will be sent to you.
  • Use this login to access any of the following Library resources and services.

Online resources

Victoria University students who study outside of Australia can access an extensive range of online library resources 24 hours a day seven days a week.

  • Library Search
    Search across the Library's online resources (including eBooks, eJournals & databases) and print collections (including books, journals, DVDs and multi-media).
  • eBooks
    These are online books that can be accessed online 24 hours a day seven days a week through Library Search.
  • eJournals
    The contents of eJournals can be searched through Library Search or you can browse for an eJournal by title.

Visiting Melbourne & accessing the Library

Offshore staff and students who come to Australia and wish to borrow books from the library need to:

  • Contact their onshore program coordinator to apply for Short-Term Borrowing Indemnity from the library.
  • Provide contact details including their onshore address. The application form then needs to be signed by the Head of Department/College and an end date provided.
  • Submit the completed form to any campus library Service Desk to be enrolled on the library management system.

Accessing resources from other libraries

  • Document request service
    If an item is not held by the VU library it can be acquired through the library's document request service. Conditions apply.
  • Document request service is available to offshore students but not offshore staff

Alumni

  • Paid members of the Alumni community can access VU libraries.
  • As an Alumni member, you will receive an ID card which will enable you to use the library and access online library resources. 
  • New applications will be active within 48 hours. Current VU staff and students are not eligible to enroll as an Alumni member (you can only be one member type).

Reciprocal Borrowers

CAVAL

CAVAL is a reciprocal borrowing program that allows staff and students of participating libraries to borrow material from other participating libraries.

  • To register you will need to bring a current staff or student card from your home institute along with a current authorised CAVAL card.

National Borrowing Scheme (NBS)

National Borrowing Scheme (NBS) allows staff and students from participating TAFE and University libraries to borrow from other tertiary education libraries in Australia.

  • Students will be asked to present a photo ID as well as proof of current enrolment. This could be your enrollment advice form or other proof from your Institute.
  • Staff members will be asked to present a photo ID and proof of current employment with an Institute participating in the scheme in order to receive an Approved Borrowers card.

Username and password/PIN

  • Username is the VU barcode on the CAVAL card or NBS card
  • Library PIN is created upon enrolment.


Online resources

  • In Library access to some e-resources is available via the public access catalogues (no general internet access available)
  • This does not include access to the VU Wireless network or general internet usage.

  • Some restrictions apply to materials from the library collection, including journals, IELTS, off-air recordings and Reference and Audio Visual Material

Borrowing conditions:

  • Borrowing limit - 10 items
  • 3 renewals allowed
  • Loan Period - 2 weeks
  • Some material restricted to 7 days, 3 days, 2 hours
  • Overdues will attract an infringement

Other services

  • Scan-to-Email facilities are available throughout all campuses, enabling you to scan material and send it to your email in PDF format.
  • Maximum of 3 holds
  • Fee for service - Interlibrary Loans, extended online searches

External Borrowers

VCE/VET (Year 11 & 12 or 18 Years & Under/Staff) 

  • Fee - $110 (Full), $55 (Concession - Pension or Health Care Card holder) for 12 months membership (total includes GST)

External Borrower Membership 

  • Fee - $110 (Full), $55 (Concession - Pension or Health Care Card holder) for 12 months membership (totals includes GST)
  • Application form must be supported by a photo ID

Corporate Borrower Membership 

  • Fee - $275 (include GST) for 12 months membership and up to 3 cards 
  • Application form must be supported by a photo ID for each card issued
