Loan periods
Loan periods may vary depending on the type of item you are borrowing (whether it is standard or restricted) and your relationship with Victoria University (whether you are a staff member, student, research candidate or .
Standard loans
The loan period for reciprocal students (CAVAL), staff and higher degree (Masters/PhD) patrons and external borrowers is 14 days, with the number of loans limited to 10 items.
While VU TAFE and undergraduate students, staff and higher degree patrons can have an unlimited number of loans, the loan period for TAFE and undergraduate students is 14 days whereas staff and higher degree patrons can borrow for up to 28 days.
Restricted loans
Certain items held by the Library will be restricted to shorter loan periods due to high demand.
- Books in high demand – 1, 3 or 7 days
- Audiovisual (DVDs) – 7 or 14 days (normally)
- Audiovisual (all other types) – 7 days (normally)
- Restricted audiovisual – 1 day
- Reserve collection – 2 hours (within the Library only)
Renewals
Standard loans can be renewed for up to 255 renewals, unless another Library patron has requested them. Restricted loans are not renewable.
Renewals can be made via the My Library, by phoning +61 3 9919 4266, or in person. A PIN is required when using the catalogue to renew items or check /place items on hold. The default PIN is your date of birth in ddmmyyy format – you can change your PIN in My Library. If you forget your PIN, you will have to visit one of the Campus Libraries Service desks to have your PIN cleared.
Placing a hold on an item
Library members can request books that are located at another campus of Victoria University or for a book that is already out on loan to be held for them upon its return.
- Patrons can place holds themselves through the Library Search and logging into My Library. Holds may not be placed over the telephone.
- Requests for holds may be placed on standard 2 - 4 week loans.
- Requests for holds can NOT be placed on items that have a restricted loan period: i.e.: 1-Day / 7-Day loans, Reserve Items OR items deemed 'NOT FOR LOAN': i.e.: reference, periodicals, not for loan and special collection items.
- Requests for holds may not be placed on audio-visual materials (video tapes, DVDs, cassette tapes and equipment). Patrons must contact the service desk at a campus to book these items.
Restrictions on holds
- Victoria University staff and students (and VU Alumni) may place a total of 10 holds at any one time.
- Non-Victoria University patrons may place a total of 3 holds at any one time.
- Library users are asked to collect their holds as soon as possible, as the library only keeps items for you for 5 working days.
- Library users collecting holds will have them issued for 2 or 4 weeks except where there are 2 or more holds on a single item. In this case, the loan period will be reduced to 7 days (1 week) only. Refer to your date-due receipt.
- BONUS+ requests (holds) are counted toward your 10 requests (holds) limit.
