If you are an international student and you want to study at Victoria University (VU) you must meet our English language entry requirements. To determine your English language level you will be required to sit a placement test and attend an interview. After this you will given a class placement and study plan.  

Below is a guide to the entry requirements for English language and University Preparation courses at our English Language Institute (ELI).

General English Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

There are no specific entry requirements for this course. You can study from an elementary to intermediate level.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Entry to EAP courses is based on your ELICOS report and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores.

Preparing for a TAFE course

To enrol in the EAP TAFE Direct Entry Preparation Course you must meet one of the following requirements:

• an assessment of 'Intermediate Achieved' in all skills in your ELI report
• IELTS Academic Module with an overall score of 5.0 with all skills at 5.0
• Paper-based TOEFL of 500 and Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4
• Computer-based TOEFL (CBT) score of 173 with an Essay Rating (ER) of 4
• Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) score of 60+ with a minimum of 15 in all sections

Successful completion of TAFE Direct Entry Preparation Course will allow you entry to VU TAFE courses.

Preparing for an Undergraduate course

To enrol in the EAP Direct Entry University Preparation Undergraduate (UPU) you must meet one of the following requirements:

• an assessment of "Upper Intermediate Achieved" level in all skills in your ELI report
• IELTS (Academic Module) result with an overall score of 5.5. (No band less than 5.0)The UP2 course will be 10 or 15 weeks depending on band scores
• paper-based TOEFL score of 525 and Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.0+
• computer-based TOEFL (CBT) score of 179 with an Essay rating (ER) score of 4
• Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) score of 70+ with a minimum of 18 in all sections

Successful completion of UP2 will allow you entry to VU undergraduate courses.

Preparing for a Postgraduate course

To enrol in the EAP Direct Entry University Preparation Postgraduate (UPP) you must meet one of the following requirements:

• an ELI assessment of "Advanced Starting" level for all skills in your ELI report
• satisfactory completion of UP2
• an IELTS (Academic Module) result with an overall score of 6.0 (no band less than 6.0)
• paper-based TOEFL (PBT) score of 550 with a TWE score of 4.0+
• IBT score of 80+ with a minimum of 20 in all sections
• CBT score of 213 with an ER score of 4

Successful completion of UP1 will allow you entry to VU postgraduate courses. Some postgraduate courses may have higher entry requirements.
